PROPERTY developer Camella Communities, a subsidiary of Vista Land and Landscapes Inc., gave the 5th Sun.Star SuperBalita in cooperation with Phoenix Petroleum 9-Ball Challenge 1st National Open a big boost having thrown its support to the annual cuefest as a major sponsor.
The three-day event is set on Friday to Sunday at the NCCC Mall activity center.
Camella general manager Marlon Escalicas and tournament chair Charles Raymond A. Maxey, also business editor of Sun.Star Davao, signed the memorandum of agreement (MOA) on Monday to seal their partnership for the biggest staging of the Superbalita 9-ball ever.
Maxey thanked Camella Communities for believing in the thrust of the billiards competition that aims to promote the sport in the grassroots with its youth categories and to provide a venue for Mindanao players to test their mettle against the best of the countryside through its open division.
“We are happy that Camella is supporting our tournament. This is indeed a welcome development as we are launching our first national open this year after the success of our Mindanao Open the past four years,” Maxey said.
He also urged interested players to sign up early on the last day of registration set at 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the NCCC Mall activity center since only the first 128 registrants in the open division will get free shirts.
In the youth division, meanwhile, siblings Christine Joy and Jay Perez were the first two registrants. Christine is a sixth-grader while Jay is a third-grader at the Magallanes Elementary School. The two may even play against each other since the elementary division as well as the High School category will be a joint boys and girls competition.
A total cash prize of P212,000 will be awarded to the top 16 open players while elementary and High School champions will win brand new cue sticks, courtesy of 1998 Asian Games gold medalist Gandy Valle, medals, gift certificates and freebies. The college men and college women’s champions will also receive medals and freebies.
Registration is ongoing at the Sun.Star Davao office, Suites 5 and 6, Grandland Bldg., R. Castillo St.
The tournament is organized by the Sun.Star Davao Publishing Inc. and co-presented by Phoenix Petroleum Philippines Inc. It is supported by the Philippine Sports Commission.
Major sponsors also include Deca Homes, Aeon Towers, Alaxan FR, SkyCable and NCCC Mall of Davao while Visuals in Motion Advertising, The Royal Mandaya Hotel, Pizzeria Michelangelo, King-King Pantukan Gold & Copper Project, Davao Light & Power Co., LP Global Network, Mama Maria’s Pizzeria, Microtel Inn & Suites Davao, city government of Davao, MindaVote, Vice Mayor Rodrigo R.
