FORMER Mindanao Open champions Gandy Valle and Christopher Alanunay of Davao City survived scares before booking quarterfinal seats in the open division of the 5th Sun.Star SuperBalita-Phoenix Petroleum 9-Ball Challenge 1st National Open at the NCCC Mall activity center Sunday. The Asian Games 1998 champion Valle, 2008 Mindanao titlist, nipped Raniel Alcover of Digos City, 7-6, while 2009 Mindanao Open champion Alanunay climbed from a 1-5 deficit to win past Dabawenyo Jech Limen, 7-6, before a capacity crowd. Valle, cheered by his family and friends, shouted in jubilation as he sealed the final ninth ball from a gruelling hill-hill battle that saw a series of lead changes. Valle was playing Rodrigo Pastoril of Koronadal, South Cotabato while Alanunay was trading skills against Ronnie Aying, also of Davao City, as of presstime. Pastoril outclassed Rhuston Quibod, 7-4, while Aying edged Reynaldo Lariba, 7-6. Reigning Mindanao Open champion Oscar Villasenor of Sarangani hacked out a 7-4 win over Larry Diga to arrange a quarterfinals match with Zoren Bantayan, a 7-2 winner over Richard Aguilar of Manila. Danjo Ordaneza of Digos turned back Rayner Espejo of Tacloban City, 7-4, to meet Eleazar Saludo of Tagum City. The latter pulled off a 7-6 victory over fellow Tagumeno Michael Mendez in the three-day P212,000 event organized by Sun.Star Davao Publishing, Inc., co-presented by Phoenix Petroleum Philippines, Inc. and supported by the Philippine Sports Commission. The tournament is backed up by Deca Homes, Camella, Aeon Towers, Alaxan FR, Green Windows Dormitel, SkyCable and NCCC Mall Davao as major sponsors with Visuals in Motion Advertising, The Royal Mandaya Hotel, Pizzeria Michelangelo, Davao Light & Power Corporation, LP Global Network, King King Copper Gold Project, Mamma Maria’s Pizzeria, Microtel Davao, city government of Davao, MindaVote, Vice-Mayor Rodrigo R.
